During the last decade, many investigations have shown the problems caused by the interaction between fishing ships and marine predators and the effect it has on bird populations (Robertson & Gales 1998, Ticklles 2000). One of the problems is the accidental capture or trapping of these birds while they are taking advantage of the bait or the discarded catch. For some species like the albatross, this problem is serious, especially in the Southern Hemisphere where they abound. The chronic mortality of some birds
Due to the interaction with fishing has seriously deteriorated the health of some populations; some of which will become extinct if something isn't done.
The experience shows that a solution could be found in the implementation of mitigation methods or the modification of some fishing practices, if all parties are willing. It may seem difficult to understand the importance of this “small” but chronic mortality for a population, especially when one sees thousands of birds flying over a net or a long line. However, some characteristics of life cycle of these birds (late-maturity or low reproduction) and the massive fishing activity show that the number of birds affected is more than important. Here we are talking about species close to extinction like the Spectacled Petrel (with only 1000 reproductive couples worldwide) or the Chatham Albatross (5,000 couples) or others more abundant like the Black-browed Albatross, who reproduce principally in the Malvinas/Falkland Islands and South Georgia’s, whose declining number of reproductive colonies is alarming.
What happens in the South Atlantic, and particularly in the Argentine Platform, holds global importance; we're talking about an area of extensive surface and high productivity (Acha et al. 2004), which makes it important not only for fishing but for a vast number of birds who come to feed from different regions of the Southern Hemisphere. In the sea waters we find a wide variety of local birds (some of which reproduce on our platform) while others come from the East Atlantic, the Pacific Ocean and even the Indian Ocean and some Austral Seas (Favero & Silva 2005).
The written and visual information presented in this book is unique, and should be merited on various levels. Firstly, for its value as tool in the identification of birds by observers. Secondly, for the disclosure of a rather serious problem that is part of another serious matter which is deterioration of the bio-diversity in the marine environment. Thirdly, for the artistic quality. And last, but not the least important, because this work was thought out and brought to life by somebody who knows the problems from inside, from working for a long times as a scientific observer on board fishing ships as a scientific observer for quite a while.
I hope that in the not too distant future we can look back on this problem with a smile and that all birds are safe from hooks and nets.

The User's Perspective
The present guide surges as an initiative of a scientific observer who works on board the Argentine commercial fishing fleet. Its objective is to accomplish the requirements of the Scientific Observers Project of the National Institute of Fishing Investigation and Development. The topics included are based on the necessary knowledge and protocols for registering good quality and independent biological facts; indispensible in the evaluation and administration of an ecological system that permits the development of responsible fishing. The purpose of this book is to provide a tool of reference for scientific observers working on board: it develops fundamental concepts in the recognition of seabirds that by some way interact with the fishing ships. This book is a visual aid in the observation of these birds that rarely appear
Alone and without specific interactions. This work, conceive within a practical approach with regards to the user's perspective, will become, without doubt, a part of the work material of all scientific observers

Over the last years, interest and concern has grown for the conservation of seabirds and their interaction with fishing activities; different approaches have been utilized to assist scientific observers on board fishing ships all over the world in the identification of species associated with fishing vessels. Concern has grown due to the significant reduction in their reproductive populations mainly due to accidents related to these ships. This work holds a particular view dealing with this problem so common in the Southern hemisphere. It combines so cleverly artistic photos with useful advice for scientific observers who wish to explore the world of seabirds in their own environment. This simple, accessible guide becomes a vital tool for scientific observers. Through a thorough and complete combination of photos and graphs the reader can refine his knowledge in the identification of seabirds. It is so necessary to identify these birds, much beyond their beauty, to begin to understand their problems within their environment: the Sea.
Many birds species have learned that around the ships they can obtain an abundant source of food, made up from fishing discarded catch, waste and bait. However, this attractive source is not without risks, like hooks or collations with cables or other parts of the boats, resulting in death. The consequences of these deaths are seen thousands of miles away in the reproduction colonies, where year by year less couples with chicks can be seen (between 1% and 4 % less each year). The two visions that amalgamate this work (artistic and techno-scientific) offer a unique opportunity to amateurs and professionals who wish to enter this special world of the sea and its birds. It puts on show the daily labor of scientific observers on board and their work conditions; practically unknown to the general public. It shows the

From Knowing To Caring
In the last fifty years, technology has advanced and allowed the fishing industry to discover new fisheries in all latitudes, permitting longer fishing times. This technology favored the industry but damaged the marine ecosystem. Over-fishing, the destruction of the sea-bed, the capture and discard of certain species were not necessarily the objective but do harm the integrity of ecosystems.
The incidental capture of some seabirds in varied fishing practices is not new, but in the last years it has grown to the point where many pelagic species are in danger of extinction. This problem is of great concern to many governments and environmental NGO's of many important countries, who are trying to enforce, among other measures, the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses & Petrels (ACAP).
Our country has not been indifferent these initiatives and, during 2005 subscribed to ACAP to comply and enforce the international normative that guarantee the survival of these birds in South Atlantic
Fisheries. With this in mind, Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina (Argentine Wildlife Foundation - FVSA) abides by this agreement and, through its Marine Programme, works together with other NGO's and government institutions in promoting the mitigation of damaging effects, education and to raise awareness in all the sectors involved with the national fishing industry and the incidental capture of seabirds.
For these reasons, this book is invaluable for Observers on Board, not only for its professionalism and passion but because it was created from an observer perspective. For these motives, the FVSA consider this guide will promote an adequate dissemination of the albatross and petrel problem in the South Atlantic and favors the necessity for changes in conduct in the future so as to mitigate the threats and dangers and better the situation.
On the other hand, all guides bring people closer to nature. In this case, to a little known species. Surely, many people will be surprised by the diversity of species that habit our coasts and Seas. We hope that the knowledge or the recognition be the first step in taking better care of these birds and by pushing for stronger measures, avoiding their extinction. Without our feathered friends, our Seas will look desolate. More than one of us will miss their rapid and magnificent flawless glides, unique to the bird world.

The Photography Vision
The photography is still a very ductile and practical way of expression, creation and documentation. The communication a photographer can get with the observer is mostly direct and clear, convincing, without leaving any doubts about what you want to show or document. It is the miracle of representing in a bidimensional way, not only the physical realities but also the subjective situations. It is the miracle of the communication captured by the photograph has quality and produces an impact on the viewer. That is why photography is art and science as well.
In this book, Mark Royo Celano gives us the forcefulness of image and at the same time poetry. His shots not only register a moment, a situation but also a sensation or many sensations. To communicate the sensation of immensity, coldness, wind, loneliness and helplessness is not easy. However, Mark makes us feel those sensations in a palpable way, image by image. It is not an ideal situation to produce
those images when you are working in tempestuous and inhospitable climates, risking your health and your physical integrity, dizzy, suffering from seasickness, blows, coldness, completely wet, but with the objective of communicating reality.
To emphasize even more the dramatic images, Mark used white and black. It was not easy for him, a photographer scientist used to register the color in its maximum reality as a sine qua non condition for the results he is looking for. But in this current color and digital world, using black and white has a clear justification and reason. First of all, you have to recognize that with dark and cloudy skies, there is almost no real color of things. You almost see everything in a monochromatic way. Secondly, white and black help the viewer's concentration, and mainly emphasize the drama of the images.
Thalassa, the Greek goddess of the Mediterranean Sea and the rest of the seas, shows here her most irascible and unpredictable character as a powerful woman that she is and knows she is, because there is not such a reality as the omnipotence of the sea that the one you can endure during a storm. The sea gives us full life, but it also has the power of taking it away from us. These pictures show that and make us be aware of it and feel respect of the seamen's tough and risky task, lost in that immensity, depending on the elements and trying to work and return home safely. However, sometimes this is not always the case.
The impossible waves, the unstoppable wind that you feel and then the shy sky opening are represented in these images with brutal realism. In many of these pictures, it seems that only the birds share the vision of those sublime and unrepeatable moments, special moments that the photographer could capture masterly. Hour by hour and day by day of difficult navigation and hard work, with poetry and reality Mark has provided we with the vision of the permanent challenge that represents the life at sea. For that reason I respect and acknowledge him, from photographer to photographer. Because of this, I recommend all of you readers this book that will let you travel with Mark Royo Celano over the crest of the waves, taste the salty water and contemplate images that you personally could hardly see and live.

The Ecology Message
Many years ago I started as a biologist at the Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (National Research Institute and Fishery Development). I remember a sunset on a deck of a fishing boat, looking how we got away from the safety of the harbor and the known environment. It was my first time I had got in touch with the sea and I tried to get used to the wide variety of sensations that all this immensity in movement before my eyes. When I could recover from the seasickness, a learning process started and I continued working on board of commercial and research vessels, listening to crew stories, the fishing viewers and the continuous whispering of the ocean. Not only did I learn about fishing, its people and the scientific work but also I learnt how to enjoy the magnificent spectacle of the sea and
felt great awe with its fury when shaking us, teaching us some lessons of humility.
It is a long time since I was on board but, luckily, Mark Royo Celano's pictures have let me recover those experiences, feel the energy of movement and appreciate the magnificent landscape. He can do it thanks to the quality of his photographs but also to the passion of the artist that can capture and communicate the message: the sea is a spectacle that is worth appreciating. There is no doubt that man is present in his pictures even though he does not appear in them, the man that works and dreams, and goes back to sea, giving up moments of his life. These pages will allow the seaman to remember his experiences. But the most important thing is that those people who have not experienced it yet, will have the opportunity to look, and feel. Mark helps us to appreciate the ocean and the work of those that take the chance and risk to live with the sea and at sea. Now we can give meaning to common phrases such as: bad weather, strong wind, to pass a storm, rough sea.
The challenges regarding the conservation of the marine biodiversity are so vast and interesting like the sea itself. One of our main challenges consist of letting people know about our natural heritage so that the whole society can support its importance, take specific measures to protect it and ensure its sustainable use. Without any doubt, the sea presents a particular challenge which is the geographical distance that separates it from our regular life. That is why we consider that this book represents one of the many bridges that we have to build in order to look and understand the sea in its whole immensity, as a source of natural resources, as a supplier of environmental service, as an object of contemplation and a source of inspiration. We have to do something now for the sea to guarantee the next generations a healthy, productive and splendid marine ecosystem. For this reason, Fundación Vida Silvestre celebrates the publication of this book by Mark Royo Celano that helps society to be aware in order to value and value to preserve.

A great seaman, the Corvette Captain Edgard Wilson Bonanni, who was my master and mentor, once wrote: “The history of the oldest countries in the world is indissolubly united to the sea. The water routes were and still are the routes towards merchant expansion and cultural interchange, along with the rapprochement of countries. Thanks to shipping, people found a safe way to grow both economically
and spiritually. They felt they were the owners of their own destinies because, among other lessons, the art of dominating the sea teaches and develops the temper to overcome human problems and strengthen the character to carry out the hardest enterprises. Man's character is shaped and he learns how to face the risks of the multiple adventure of living. Man is more conscious and makes efforts to dominate
his adversary that, all of a sudden, rages, roars and moves wildly.”
In those incredible images, another great friend of the sea and colleague in specialized journalism, Mark Royo Celano, has been able to capture all that power, that character in such close symbiosis, the man and the sea, seas and men daily struggle to impose their wishes. Man's wish on the sea... sea's wish on the man., triumph and tragedy, skill and strength against the winds and storms, shuddering waves and calm seas. Thousand-year-old confrontation captured in excellent pictures that more than thousand words can say. Thanks to his professional skill and marine love, today in this book, these pictures illustrate the arena where we carry out our activities, and where I also shared with the author a lot of hours on deck, and many maritime miles. I am thankful for his generosity and concern to show the people that the sea is for some of us the mystic of the man's domain above elements. We all go to sea: seamen, merchants, scientists and military men.
We all respect the sea. For men, the sea is a mystical and living element. We need to know and understand the sea. We have learnt that we cannot dominate the Sea, only we can sail it and ply it... with skill but also with a lot of respect. This is the real daily challenge and you will be able to understand this by looking at these pictures.

Acerca del valor de las imágenes del Mar Argentino
Las imágenes obtenidas son el resultado de más de 4 años de trabajo, embarcado durante más de 400 días tan lejos como 350 km de la costa más cercana, con vientos de 90 km y olas de 15 mts, alejado de la familia, colaborando con la investigación de nuestros recursos pesqueros y la captura accidental de aves marinas producto del “by catch”. Su valor puede resumirse en los siguientes puntos:
1) VALOR CIENTÍFICO: Las fotos obtenidas colaboraron en la identificación de aves marinas productos del by catch realizándose una Guía Fotográfica de Identificación de Aves Marinas del Atlántico Sur, como asistencia para observadores de pesca tanto nacionales como internacionales. De hecho, el libro fue presentado en el congreso de Observadores en Canada , siendo reconocido el trabajo por su excelencia. Asi mismo, las imágenes de aves nutren cientos de reportes científicos de entidades nacionales e internacionales como: el Foro para la Conservación del Mar Patagónico, World Wildlife Found, Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina – Programa Marino, Consejo Federal Pesquero, American Bird Conservacy, etc. entre otros.
Tomando como ejemplo y sintesis las palabras del Dr. Marcos Favero del CONICET quien dijo:- La información visual y escrita que se presenta en esta obra es única y merece ser destacada desde varios perfiles. Primero por su valor como herramienta para la identificación de aves por observadores pesqueros. Segundo, por la divulgación de un problema que no es menor y que se encuentra ligado a una problemática mucho más compleja como el deterioro de la biodiversidad en el ambiente marino. Tercero, por la calidad artística, y finalmente pero no menos importante, por el hecho de que esta obra fue ideada y realizada por alguien que conoce el problema desde adentro al haber trabajado por largo tiempo como observador científico a bordo de buques pesqueros. 2) VALOR ARTISTICO: Todo fotógrafo sabe lo complejo que es sacar una foto de un objeto en movimiento, mucho más cuando además el fotógrafo se encuentra en movimiento, entonces, consulten a cualquier fotógrafo profesional lo difícil que es sacar a un ave en vuelo que vuela a 80 km/h a 100 mts de un barco que a la vez, sube y baja 10 mts, rola, escora y se mueve, mientras uno intenta no caerse, no descomponerse y hacer foco en el ave. Yo se que técnicamente fue uno de los desafíos más grande que he tenido como profesional de la fotografía. De ahí, que la exposición realizada en Nove, Italia, en 2013, haya sido organizada por el grupo de fotógrafos profesionales Grupo 9, admiradores como colegas de las imágenes obtenidas.
Una buena síntesis son las palabras escritas en el prólogo del libro “Paisajes Marinos del Atlántico Sur” por el ex presidente de AGFA en Argentina y miembro Honorífico de la Federación Internacional de Fotografía Don Rogelio Rozas: “Mark Royo Celano nos brinda en este libro esa contundencia de la imagen y al mismo tiempo esa poesía. Sus tomas no sólo registran un momento, una situación, sino una sensación. O muchas. Transmitir la sensación de inmensidad, de frío, viento, soledad y desamparo, no es nada fácil, pero Mark nos hace sentir esas sensaciones en forma palpable, imagen tras imagen. No es una situación ideal para producir dichas imágenes estar trabajando con climas tempestuosos e inhóspitos. Con riesgo para la salud y la integridad física. Mareado, con descomposturas, con golpes, con frío, mojado hasta los huesos, pero con el objetivo fijo en la reproducción de la realidad. Para acentuar más el dramatismo de las imágenes, Mark usó el blanco y negro. Y en segundo lugar el blanco y negro ayuda a la concentración del observador, y fundamentalmente resalta en las imágenes el dramatismo que ya tiene el tema de por sí. Mark nos brinda con realidad y poesía el permanente desafío que representa la vida en el mar. De ahí mi respeto y reconocimiento. De fotógrafo a fotógrafo. Por eso recomiendo a todos los que se avienen al viaje que propone este libro, se dejen llevar de la mano de Mark Royo Celano para sobrevolar la cresta de las olas, para sentir el sabor del agua salada, y para contemplar imágenes que difícilmente podamos ver y vivir personalmente. 3) VALOR DOCUMENTAL: Las imágenes muestran una realidad cruda, cierta, poco conocida por las personas de tierra. Muestra el trabajo de gente que se juega la vida para traer el pescado al hogar, para que todos disfrutemos de esa cosecha. Las imágenes nos hacen ver condiciones de trabajo, donde ni la mejor de las preparaciones psicológicas a veces es suficiente para contrarrestar las condiciones climáticas de un mar increíble, duro, feroz pero bondadoso. Muestran realidades que tampoco queremos ver, como ser la muerte de especies acompañantes por by catch, muestra la sobrepesca, y por sobre todo muestra, la grandeza de nuestro Mar Argentino.
En palabras de biólogo Guillermo Cañete de la Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina, expresadas en el prólogo del libro “Paisajes Marinos del Atlántico Sur”: - Mark nos ayuda a apreciar el mar y valorar la tarea de aquellos que se animan y arriesgan a convivir con él y en él. Ahora podremos darles significado a frases comunes como: mal tiempo, viento fuerte, capear el temporal, mar de fondo. Debemos actuar hoy, por el mar de hoy, para garantizarles a las próximas generaciones un ecosistema marino sano, productivo y espléndido. 4) VALOR ESTETICO: pero todo eso se muestra con belleza. Las imágenes no dejan de ser hermosas, como postales para la casa sacadas desde el living, cuentan con los colores necesarios cuando se requieren, o hablan en blanco y negro para potenciar el dramatismo oscuro de la tormenta de mar. Las imágenes sondean en la belleza que tienen los rayos del sol que se filtran entre una nube cargada de rayos, o exponen olas de varios metros como el retrato de un mar tempestuoso.
Las fotos respetan las reglas básicas de la fotografía, en composición, armado, tema y color, por el que estéticamente aportan un valor de belleza que las hace aptas para ampliar y decorar, nuestras casas, oficinas, salones, paredes y de alguna manera “estar ahí” mientras nos deleitamos con su belleza.

LA VISIÓN DE LA FOTOGRAFÍA:
La fotografía sigue siendo un medio de expresión, creación y documentación sumamente dúctil y práctico. La comunicación con el observador que logra el fotógrafo, la gran mayoría de las veces es directa y clara, contundente, sin dejar dudas de lo que se quiso mostrar o documentar. Es el milagro de representar, en forma bidimensional, no sólo realidades físicas sino incluso situaciones subjetivas. Es el milagro de la comunicación, producido toda vez que la fotografía es de calidad e impacta en el observador. Por eso la fotografía es tanto arte como ciencia.

Thalassa, la griega diosa del mar Mediterráneo, y por extensión de todos los mares, muestra aquí su carácter más irascible e impredecible, como mujer poderosa que es y que se sabe que es. Porque no hay mayor realidad de la omnipotencia del mar que la vivida durante una tormenta. El mar nos da vida con plenitud, pero también tiene el poder de quitárnosla cuando así se dan las condiciones. Nada más demostrativo que estas fotos para tomar conciencia, y sentir respeto de la dura y riesgosa tarea de los hombres de mar. Perdidos en esas inmensidades, a expensas de los elementos, y tratando de trabajar y poder volver a buen puerto con la labor cumplida. Aunque no siempre sea ése el resultado.
Las olas imposibles, el viento imparable, que se siente, y luego la tímida apertura del cielo, están representados en estas imágenes con brutal realismo. En muchas de ellas parece que sólo las aves comparten la visión de esos momentos sublimes e irrepetibles. Momentos especiales que supo el fotógrafo registrar con maestría. Con horas y horas, y día tras día de difícil navegación y sacrificada tarea, Mark nos brinda con realidad y poesía el permanente desafío que representa la vida en el mar. De ahí mi respeto y reconocimiento. De fotógrafo a fotógrafo. Por eso recomiendo a todos los que se avienen al viaje que propone este libro, se dejen llevar de la mano de Mark Royo Celano para sobrevolar la cresta de las olas, para sentir el sabor del agua salada, y para contemplar imágenes que difícilmente podamos ver y vivir personalmente.

LA IMPORTANCIA DE LA ECOLOGIA:
Hace ya unos cuantos años comencé a dar mis primeros pasos como biólogo en el Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero. Recuerdo un atardecer en la cubierta de un barco pesquero mirando como nos alejábamos de la seguridad del puerto y lo conocido. Fue mi primer contacto con el mar, tratando de asimilar el aluvión de sensaciones que nos propone esa inmensidad en movimiento. Cuando pude juntar fuerzas para sobreponerme al “mal de mar”, se inició un proceso de aprendizaje que continuó en sucesivos embarques en buques comerciales y de investigación, escuchando los relatos de la tripulación, los observadores pesqueros y el continuo susurro del océano. No sólo aprendí sobre la pesca, su gente y la tarea científica. También aprendí a disfrutar del espectáculo majestuoso del mar y sobrecogerme con su furia, cuando nos sacude inclemente dándonos algunas lecciones de humildad.
Ya ha pasado un largo tiempo desde que no me embarco pero, afortunadamente, las imágenes de Mark Royo Celano me han permitido recuperar esas vivencias, sentir la energía del movimiento y apreciar el magnífico paisaje. Logra hacerlo por la calidad de sus fotografías, pero también por la pasión del artista que invierte mucho de sí mismo para captar y transmitir el mensaje: el mar es un espectáculo que vale la pena apreciar. Sin duda el hombre está en sus imágenes, aún sin mostrarlo. El hombre que trabaja y sueña, y vuelve al mar sacrificando facetas de su vida. El recorrido de estas páginas le permitirá al hombre de mar rememorar sus vivencias.
Pero lo más importante, le dará a aquel que aún no pudo disfrutarlo, la oportunidad de una mirada, una aproximación a la sensación. Mark nos ayuda a apreciar el mar y valorar la tarea de aquellos que se animan y arriesgan a convivir con él y en él. Ahora podremos darles significado a frases comunes como: mal tiempo, viento fuerte, capear el temporal, mar de fondo.
Los desafíos que plantea la conservación de la biodiversidad marina son tan amplios y apasionantes como el mar mismo. Uno de nuestros principales desafíos consiste en dar a conocer nuestro patrimonio natural, y así lograr el apoyo de la sociedad en su conjunto para valorar su importancia, tomar medidas concretas para protegerlo y asegurar su uso sustentable. El mar, sin dudas, presenta un reto particular, que es la distancia geográfica que lo separa de nuestra vida cotidiana. Por eso, consideramos que esta obra representa uno de los tanto puentes que debemos construir para observar y comprender al mar en toda su inmensidad: como reservorio de recursos naturales, como proveedor de servicios ambientales y como objeto de contemplación y fuente de inspiración. Debemos actuar hoy, por el mar de hoy, para garantizarles a las próximas generaciones un ecosistema marino sano, productivo y espléndido. Por eso, desde la Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina celebramos la aparición de esta obra de Mark Royo Celano que ayuda a la sociedad a conocer para valorar y valorar para conservar.

La lente, una mano certera y un mundo por definir:
elementos y espacios que reflejan la bravura
del mar y de los hombres que lo enfrentan,
que juegan su vida en él.
El mar y todos aquellos que, juntos o en soledad,
lo disfrutan, lo padecen, lo hacen hogar,
viven sus afanes, sortean sus desafíos,
lo resguardan y defienden…
El hombre en el mar, el mar en el hombre:
una comunidad ancestral.
El hombre de mar, al mar.
El mar: de nadie. El mar para todos…
Como miembros de la Prefectura Naval Argentina estamos ligados a la vida en el mar, a su mística y a las contingencias que de ellas surgen, por eso es un verdadero placer compartir este tributo al Mar Argentino y a sus navegantes: un retrato que nos emociona por su sentido testimonial, una obra de magnífica calidad visual, un libro cuyas fotos y textos, entre blanco y negro, se complementan para reflejar el honor de los hombres de mar, así como la bravura de la naturaleza y las peripecias de la vida a bordo. Un valioso homenaje a todos los que cotidianamente afrontan el desafío de zarpar y lo hacen convencidos de la meta que persiguen.
Mark Royo Celano, prestigioso hombre de la náutica, el arte, la ciencia y la comunicación, supo recrear las secuencias más íntimas que quedan grabadas en la retina del navegante ante la inefable experiencia de integrarse a esta naturaleza indescriptible. Quienes navegamos sabemos muy bien de su gigantesca hermosura a la vez que de su desafiante amenaza cuando el oleaje intenso y el viento se hacen protagonistas de la escena. Es allí cuando los rigores que plantean la bravura del mar y la tenacidad del hombre refuerzan la solidaridad, la fraternidad y enseñan al instante que el trabajo en equipo es el único camino para preservar la vida.
El mar es vida y da vida. A través del mar la vida parte, se hace, regresa. Por el mar se trasladan personas, bienes, productos
y servicios que recrean la vida entre costa y costa. El devenir de la cultura y la tecnología hace que lo que fuera patrimonio y responsabilidad
de unos pocos la vida en el mar, uno de los ejes centrales que desde 1810 custodia, asiste y asegura la Prefectura Naval hoy sea ámbito
de actuación y posibilidad de desarrollo para infinitas personas y multitud de naciones que, con variados intereses, intercambian por, con y
en el mar aquello que tienen para ofrecerle al mundo.
Esta destacada composición artística es una fehaciente muestra de ello. Sus páginas resumen la necesidad de conocer,
comprender y proteger el medio marino, sus seres y sus actividades haciendo un buen uso de todo cuanto brindan en bonanza o con fiereza.
Los efectivos de esta Institución felicitamos al autor de Paisajes Marinos del Atlántico Sur por esta conmovedora obra e
invitamos a los lectores a introducirse en este mundo de imágenes que reflejan con exactitud y emoción las vicisitudes del hombre de mar.

LA VISION DE LA ARMADA ARGENTINA
Un gran marino, el capitán de corbeta Edgard Wilson Bonanni, quien fuera mi maestro y mentor, escribió una vez: “La historia de los países más antiguos del mundo está indisolublemente unida al mar. Las de las aguas fueron y siguen siendo las rutas obligadas de la expansión mercantil y del intercambio cultural, junto con la aproximación de los pueblos. En la navegación encontraron los pueblos una manera segura para elaborar su grandeza, tanto económica como espiritual. Se sintieron más dueños de sus destinos pues, entre otras lecciones, el arte de dominar el mar enseña y desarrolla el temple para sobrellevar las vicisitudes humanas y fortalecer el ánimo para poder así llevar a cabo las empresas más arduas. Se educa el carácter y se aprende a afrontar los riesgos de la múltiple aventura de vivir. El hombre crece en su conciencia y no elude el esfuerzo para someter a ese adversario que, de pronto, se encrespa con la furia de sus contorsiones enloquecidas y estremece en rugidos”.
Otro gran amigo del mar y colega en el periodismo especializado, Mark Royo Celano, ha logrado captar en estas increíbles imágenes toda esa fuerza, ese carácter con el que en estrecha simbiosis, hombre y mar, mares y hombres a diario pujan para imponer sus voluntades. La del hombre sobre el mar… la del mar sobre el hombre. Triunfo y tragedia, pericia y valor contra vientos y tempestades, olas que estremecen y mares de calma. Confrontación milenaria que en fotos excelentes, que valen más que miles de palabras, gracias a la pericia profesional y su propio amor marinero, hoy ilustran en este libro el ámbito donde desempeñamos nuestra actividad, y en el que compartí junto al autor muchas horas de cubierta, muchas millas navegadas. Gracias por su generosidad y su preocupación por mostrarle al público que el mar encierra para algunos de nosotros la mística del dominio del hombre sobre los elementos. Todos vamos hacia él: pescadores, mercantes, científicos y militares. Todos lo respetamos por igual. El mar es para el hombre un elemento místico y vivo. Hay que conocerlo y entenderlo.
Aprendimos que al Mar no se lo puede dominar, sólo podemos navegarlo y transitarlo… con pericia, sí, pero con mucho respeto también; ése es el verdadero desafío diario, y en estas fotos podrán comprobarlo. Con todo mi afecto hacia Mark, este especial Amigo y fotógrafo del Mar:
